History
Founded in 1986 with a second Centre opened in New Romney in 2015, we aim to rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned animals.
We take in dogs and cats from two main sources: local ‘handed-in’ pets and Welsh ‘Pound dogs’ saved from their death row sentence. For many it truly is their Last Chance.
Adoption Process
If you feel you can offer a loving home, here’s how our adoption process works.
If you’re unsure about any step, please don't hesitate to get in touch - we’re always happy to talk it through.
-
Visit the rescue centre
All household members - including any existing dogs - must visit the centre to meet the animal.
-
Speak with our team
We’ll discuss your home, lifestyle, and experience to help match you with the right animal.
-
Home check
A home check is carried out to ensure the environment is safe and suitable.
This includes checking for a secure garden (minimum 5ft fencing) and any potential hazards such as ponds or pools.
-
Collection
Once approved, we can only reserve animals for a short time - usually 48 hours.
Collection must be during opening times (see here).
When you collect, we will complete the paperwork with you and then you can take your new companion home!
Key Adoption Requirements
- We cannot rehome animals if you are about to move house, go on holiday, or if anyone in the household is pregnant.
- If you live in rented accommodation, written approval from your landlord allowing pets is required.
- All existing pets in the household must be neutered.
- We do not home bitches to live with other bitches.
- Animals that are old enough are neutered by us. For puppies or kittens, adopters must sign an agreement to neuter at the appropriate age.
- For puppies, written proof of enrolment in a puppy socialisation class is required at collection.
- Puppies should not be left alone for more than 2 hours at a time. Older dogs vary by individual.
- For cats, we’ll need to know whether there’s a cat flap, or how the cat could get to safe shelter quickly if needed. We don’t usually rehome cats to properties on busy roads, but we sometimes have indoor cats that do well in flats.
If you have any questions, please visit our
contact page for phone and email details.
There are often exceptions depending on the individual animal and situation.
We look forward to helping you find the right match.
Giving up a pet
We understand that sometimes circumstances change and you may find yourself in a position where you can no longer care for your pet. If you need to give up a pet, please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to assist you in finding a new home for your pet or provide advice on the next steps.
Please note that we have limited capacity and may not be able to take in every pet, but we will always try to help or direct you to other resources that can.
Volunteering
Volunteers make our operation possible. From dog walking and cat socialisation to fundraising and administrative support, there are numerous ways you can contribute.
If you are passionate about animal welfare and would like to make a difference, please consider joining our volunteer team. No prior experience is necessary, just a love for animals and a willingness to help.
